Brief lesson description

Students will use pbwiki.com to write a state report. Each student will have their own file on a common pbwiki.com.

Language Arts – 11.3.2 Use a variety of library resources, media, and technology to find information on a topic. 11.3.3 Give credit for others’ ideas, images, and information. 11.3.4 Record information from print and non-print resources.

Social Studies – Benchmark 1.0 Students use maps, globes, and other geographic tools and technologies to locate and derive information about people, places, and environments.

Technology – 2.4 Use input devices – 2.11 Demonstrate sharing of data among a variety of programs through copying, linking, and/or embedding text and graphical objects.2.2.1 Use technological learning tools to enhance and extend learning and achievement through the development of effective communication skills.

Procedure

Students will complete an online state report. They will use pbwiki.com as a common site. Each student is responsible for entering in information, but others can comment or add suggestions to their file.

Previous Weeks

Discuss project and how to use and how not to use the pbwiki.com site. Talk about the importance of citing sources and how to do it. Choose a state.

Day 1

Discussing the site and template. Have the students play around with interface.

Day 2

Talk about the use of online sources, encyclopedias, and other books available on states.

Days 3 - 12

Students will be gathering information and drawing maps and pictures that will be scanned into the computer.

Days 16 – 19

Comments and reviewing of work by other members of class.

Day 20

Presentation to others.
